About

Vaital Deula (8th century CE) is a rare and striking Khakhara style Kalinga temple in Old Town Bhubaneswar, dedicated to Goddess Chamunda (Kapali). It features a barrel-vaulted elongated roof structure reminiscent of South Indian gopuram tops or early Buddhist chaitya halls. The inner sanctum houses a terrifying eight-armed Chamunda seated on a corpse, flanked by esoteric Tantric figures and intricate relief panels illustrating early Bhauma-Kara sculptural art.
