About
The Kankali Devi Temple at Tigawa (Tigowa) in Katni district is one of the most pristine and complete surviving specimens of 5th-century Gupta stone architecture. It features a square, flat-roofed sanctum preceded by an open porch supported on four pillars crowned with ornate bell-capitals and crouching lions with trees between them. The doorway is framed by sculpted figures of the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, representing the apex of early classical temple construction before the introduction of shikharas.
