About
Tarakeswar Shiva Temple in Hooghly district of West Bengal is one of the most important Shiva pilgrimage sites in Eastern India, attracting over 1 crore pilgrims annually during Shiva Chaturdashi (Shivaratri) and Sawan (monsoon). The original shrine dates to the 17th century, with the current prominent stone complex built and expanded through the 18th and 19th centuries by local zamindars and the Hooghly Imami Nawabs.
The presiding deity is Tarakeswar — Shiva as the liberator of devotees through the mantra Om Namah Shivaya. Devotees carry sacred Ganga water on foot from Kolkata (a 58-km walk called the Bol Bom procession) to offer to the lingam during Sawan. The temple complex includes a large sacred tank, multiple subsidiary shrines, and a broad ceremonial path used during festivals.
