About

Built by Chola king Kulothunga Chola I in 1100 CE, Suryanar Kovil is a rare dedicated temple for Surya (the Sun God) and the head of the nine Navagraha temples surrounding Kumbakonam. Unlike typical temples, Surya is depicted holding lotus flowers facing West with shrines for all other eight planetary deities surrounding him.
