About

Shamlaji Temple (Garbhada Temple) in Aravalli district, Gujarat, is an important Vaishnava temple dedicated to Shamlaji — a dark-complexioned form of Vishnu-Krishna — on the banks of the Meshwo River. The original Pratihara-era 10th-century shrine was substantially reconstructed and expanded with a new stone gopura and mandapas in the 20th century.

The annual Kartik Purnima Mela at Shamlaji draws over 5 lakh tribal pilgrims from the Bhil and other Adivasi communities of Gujarat and Rajasthan — one of the largest tribal pilgrimage gatherings in India. The site has rich archaeological significance, with nearby Devni Mori having yielded Buddhist relics. The temple serves as an important cultural bridge between Adivasi folk religion and mainstream Vaishnavism in Gujarat.
