About

Sankaragaurisvara Temple is a grand 9th-century stone temple standing in Pattan, Baramulla district. Commissioned between 883 and 902 CE by King Sankaravarman (son of King Avantivarman) when he established his capital at Sankarapurapattana (modern Pattan), the temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built with massive limestone masonry blocks, the temple features a square garbhagriha, trefoil-arched niches, fluted pillars, and intricate relief carvings depicting Shiva, Parvati, and ganas. Though the upper sikhara has collapsed over time, the lower walls and grand portico remain intact. It is protected by the ASI as a Monument of National Importance.
