Pundarikakshan Perumal Temple in Thiruvellarai is a historic 8th-century Vaishnavite temple pre-dating Srirangam. It features rock-cut cave shrines built during Pallava king Dantivarman's rule and a famous Swastika-shaped stepped tank (Marpiti Kinaru) constructed in 800 CE with ancient Tamil inscriptions.
