About
Pakbirra Jain Temples, also locally known as Mahanir Deul or Bhairav Mandir, is a historic archaeological complex of sandstone Rekh Deul temples and open-air Jain sculptures located in Puncha block of Purulia district, West Bengal. Dating back to the 9th to 10th century CE during the Pala era, it was a flourishing center of Digambara Jainism along the Kangsabati River basin. Three tall stone deuls remain standing today, constructed in the classical Orissan Rekha Nagara architecture without mortar. The complex houses a monumental 8-foot-high standing stone idol of Tirthankara Padmaprabha (or Rishabhanatha) alongside numerous stone relief panels depicting Yakshas, Yakshinis, and lotus medallions. The site is a protected monument under the West Bengal Heritage Commission.
