About
Located at the meeting point of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges in Anuppur district, Amarkantak is revered as the Teertharaja (King of Pilgrimages) and the sacred birthplace of the Narmada and Son rivers. The ancient stone temples of the complex, including the Machhendranath and Pataleshwar temples, were constructed by Kalachuri King Karna (1041–1073 CE) in fine Nagara style. Pataleshwar features an underground sanctum where Lord Shiva is worshipped, while adjacent shrines celebrate Goddess Narmada inside the active Narmada Kund.
