About
Nagaraja Temple is a historic and unique serpent deity temple located in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu — the city itself deriving its name ('Temple of the Nagas') from this shrine. Dating back to before the 12th century CE, the temple exhibits a rare synthesis of Hindu and Jain architecture, housing stone sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras Parshvanatha and Mahavira alongside Hindu serpent deities. The main sanctum features a thatched reed roof over a damp sand floor where five-headed stone Nagaraja idols are consecrated. Devotees offer milk and turmeric to the serpent deities to remove Nagadosha. It is protected by the HR&CE Department.
