About
Mamleshwar Temple, located in Mamal village across the Lidder River in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, is an ancient stone Shiva temple dating back to the 12th century CE (c. 1100 CE). Built under the reign of King Jayasimha of the Lohara dynasty, the temple derives its name from 'Mamma Mal' ('do not go'), associated with the legend of Lord Ganesha guarding the doorway for Goddess Parvati. Built of grey dressed stone blocks on a square plinth, the temple features a stone pedestal sanctum housing a natural spring (kund) and a historic Shiva Lingam. It is a state-protected heritage monument under the J&K Archives & Archaeology Department.
