About
Mahakaleshwar Temple and Mahakal Lok Corridor in Ujjain enshrines one of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the self-manifested Shiva lingam at Ujjain, where Shiva defeated the demon Dushan. The original temple is ancient (first mentioned in 7th century CE texts), but the current structure dates to the 18th century Maratha/Scindian period.
The Mahakal Lok Corridor — inaugurated in October 2022 at a cost of ₹850 crore — created a 920-metre long stone-paved promenade connecting the temple to the Rudra Sagar lake. The corridor features 108 monumental statues of Lord Shiva carved in Rajasthani sandstone, depicting scenes from the Shiva Purana, plus 200 relief sculptures. The Mahakaleshwar temple is unique for its south-facing Bhasma Aarti — a dawn ritual using sacred ash from cremation grounds — which pilgrims book months in advance. Over 1 lakh pilgrims visit daily.
