About

Karni Mata Temple in Bikaner is a remarkable Hindu temple dedicated to Karni Mata — a 15th-century mystic and saint who is venerated as an incarnation of Durga. The temple is most famous for the approximately 25,000 sacred rats (kabas) that inhabit the temple and are believed to be the reincarnated souls of Karni Mata's devotees.

The current white marble facade was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner in the early 20th century, featuring intricate marble carvings, silver-plated doors (donated by the royal family), and panels depicting scenes from Karni Mata's life. Touching or being touched by one of the sacred rats is considered especially auspicious. A white rat — very rarely seen — is considered the luckiest omen for pilgrims. The temple draws pilgrims from across Rajasthan and India, particularly during Navratri.
