About
Jwala Ji Temple (Jawala Mukhi) in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas and one of the most unique shrines in India — there is no idol here. Instead, the goddess Jawala Mukhi manifests as a cluster of natural blue gas flames (jwalas) that have burned continuously for thousands of years from cracks in the rock, fed by naturally occurring methane and hydrogen gas.
The main shrine features a golden dome donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and a silver canopy presented by Mughal Emperor Akbar (who reportedly tried to extinguish the flames and failed). The temple complex includes several other flame shrines representing different forms of the goddess. This natural phenomenon gives the temple an otherworldly atmosphere — worshippers offer oil and camphor to the flames. The annual Navratri festivals attract over 5 lakh pilgrims.
