About
Guganathaswamy Temple is a historic 1,000-year-old stone Shiva temple located near the Kanyakumari railway station in Kanyakumari town, Tamil Nadu. Built during the 11th century CE by Chola Emperor Rajaraja Chola I, the temple stands as a rare specimen of Imperial Chola granite architecture at the southern tip of the subcontinent. The temple features 16 ancient Chola stone inscriptions recording land grants by Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I. Constructed of dark granite stone blocks with carved pilasters and a stone garbhagriha, it houses a revered Shiva Lingam (Guganatheeswarar). It is protected by the HR&CE Department.
