About

Known colloquially as the 'Khajuraho of the Chambal', Garh Padhavli in Morena district was originally a magnificent 10th-century Shiva temple complex, later enclosed within defensive stone bastions by the Jat rulers of Gohad in the 18th century. The interior pillared mukhamandapa is astonishingly intact, covered ceiling-to-column with some of the most intricate and dense carvings in Central India, depicting the Dashavatara of Vishnu, Shiva's marriage to Parvati, Samudra Manthan, Ramayana episodes, and celestial surasundaris.
