About
Galtaji Temple Complex in Jaipur — also called the Monkey Temple — is a stunning 18th-century pink sandstone temple complex built into a natural gorge in the Aravalli Hills, about 10 km from central Jaipur. Established by Saint Divan Krishnadas Payahari in the 15th century, the complex was significantly expanded with stone pavilions, chhatris, and mandapas by the Kachwaha Rajput rulers in the 18th-19th centuries.
The complex contains seven sacred kunds (tanks) fed by a natural spring — particularly the Galta Kund, considered especially holy. The main temples are dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Rama, with the Galta Kund Monkey Temple being famous for its enormous population of Rhesus macaque monkeys considered sacred. The natural rocky gorge setting, with pink sandstone temples cascading down the hillside, makes it one of the most scenic temple complexes in Rajasthan.
