About

Eran (ancient Airikina) is an extraordinarily historic archaeological site in Sagar district on the banks of the Bina River. It is renowned for its 5th-century Gupta-period monuments, particularly the colossal monolithic zoomorphic Varaha (boar avatar of Vishnu) commissioned during the reign of the Alchon Hun king Toramana. The entire body of the stone Varaha is intricately carved with rows of miniature rishis and sages, bearing a foundational Brahmi inscription. Adjacent ruins include a Gupta Vishnu temple mandapa with ornate columns and a soaring 43-foot Garuda pillar dedicated by King Budhagupta in 484 CE.
