About

Perched atop a scenic hillock overlooking the Narmada River and its famous marble canyon at Bhedaghat, the 10th-century Chausath Yogini Temple is one of India's largest and most remarkable open-air circular temples. Built during the reign of the Kalachuris of Tripuri, the complex has an internal diameter of about 116 feet and consists of 84 pillared peripheral niches containing carved yogini statues with distinct vahanas and inscriptions. At the center of the courtyard stands the Gauri-Shankara shrine depicting Shiva and Parvati seated upon Nandi.
