About

Bijamandal, also historically known as Vijayamandira, was a gigantic temple dedicated to the goddess Charchika (a form of Durga) constructed in the late 11th century by Paramara King Naravarman. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India revealed that its plinth dimensions rivaled or even surpassed the renowned Bhojeshwar Temple at Bhojpur. Although desecrated during the medieval Sultanate and Mughal invasions, its colossal stepped platform and expansive sculpture yard preserve hundreds of classical Paramara friezes and inscriptions.
