About

Bhumara (also known as Bhumra or Bharkuleshwar) is a seminal 5th-to-6th-century Gupta-period Shiva temple discovered by Alexander Cunningham in Satna district. It is widely celebrated in Indian art history for its monumental and remarkably expressive Ekamukha (single-faced) Shiva Linga housed inside the garbha griha, as well as its exquisitely carved sanctum doorway featuring river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna and animated medallion gavakshas portraying deities like Ganesha, Yama, and Kartikeya.
