About

Bawangaja is a celebrated Digambara Jain Atishay Kshetra located in the Satpura mountain range in Barwani district. It is famous worldwide for its colossal 84-foot (26 m) tall megalithic rock-cut statue of the first Tirthankara, Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinath), carved directly into the sheer mountain cliffside in the 12th century. The idol stands in Kayotsarga posture with symmetrical proportions and peaceful meditation gaze. The summit of Choolgiri features additional ancient shrines commemorating the nirvana of Indrajit and Kumbhakarna.
