About
Built by Kulothunga Chola I in the early 12th century, Melakadambur Amritaghateswarar Temple is the earliest known chariot-shaped (Karakkoil) temple in South Indian architecture. The main sanctum is carved like a horse-drawn granite chariot with intricate wheels and miniature relief panels.
